Energy Saving Tips for Your Home and Office

Now is a great time to start making those small changes that make a big difference for our environment.  An easy place to start is with energy conservation. By cutting back on wasted energy, we not only help the environment but also save money!

Did you know that if all the coal used to produce the energy used by the United States was on one train, it would be long enough to stretch around the world 3 times?  We hope everyone will make some effort to reduce the amount of unnecessary energy used in our country.

Here are a few easy tips everyone can do to save energy:

  • Shut down your computer at night.
It takes up to 300 trees to absorb the yearly CO2 emissions generated by a single PC left on 24 hours a day.  Imagine how much you could save by just shutting down your computer when you wouldn’t be using it anyway!
  • Turn off your computer monitor at night and when you will be away from your computer for more than 20 minutes.
Computer monitors waste over $900 MILLION in electricity per year! Just push one button to turn it off, or check your computer settings for power management options that will allow you set your monitor to turn off automatically.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
Lights alone consume about 20% of all the energy used in the United States. Why light up a room that no one is using? The practice is simple: when you leave a room or leave your home, turn out the lights!
  • Un-plug electronics and appliances with digital displays when not in use.
Electronics and appliances like televisions, DVD players, stereos, coffee makers, toasters and microwaves drain energy even when they're turned off due to their power lights, digital displays, clocks, sleep modes and/or stand-by modes.  Plug them into a power strip so instead of un-plugging each one you can just flip one switch and turn off the whole strip!
