How to Make Your Vacation More Eco-Friendly
Summer is the perfect time for that dream vacation. Why not try to make it a more sustainable trip? Below are some quick and easy tips for ways to make your vacation more eco-friendly and just as enjoyable:
- Take a vacation closer to home. This is a great option, especially if this year’s budget is tight. The environmental impact shrinks considerably and you may be surprised at what wonders you've never seen in your neck of the woods.
- Save energy while you travel. Be sure to unplug all unnecessary appliances and electronics before leaving the house, as well as setting the thermostat to an energy saving temperature. You’ll be reducing your energy consumption and saving money at the same time.
- Take a train or a bus. If possible, taking some form of public transportation (besides air travel) is a much more environmentally friendly option than driving your own car. If you must drive a rental car, look for a green option.
- If you must drive - try to save gas.
- Pack lighter: According to the Energy Department, carrying an extra 100 pounds reduces a vehicle's fuel economy by up to 2 percent. The percentage is higher with smaller cars.
- Get sleeker: The Farmer's Almanac estimates that removing a roof rack can improve fuel economy by 5 percent
- Visit the mechanic: Replacing a clogged air filter increases fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent. An engine tune-up can increase mileage by up to 4 percent.
- Stay at a green hotel. The best way to ensure that your lodgings are eco-friendly is to get reservations at a certified green hotel or inn. You can find green hotels online through websites such as www.planeta.com, www.ecotourism.org, and www.sustainabletravelinternational.org. You can also ask your hotel or cruise line what it is doing to minimize the impact on the environment.
- Conserve water. Conserve water and soap at hotels by requesting not to have linens and towels changed every day. If the local water is safe to drink, bring a reusable water container so that you won't have to purchase one.
- Dine with a low impact. For an eco-friendly vacation meal, pick up picnic ingredients at a local farmers market and pack them in a basket with reusable containers, plates and utensils - not Styrofoam and plastic bags/utensils.
