Give Your Car a Break this Summer
The start of summer means that more people are taking off on their long awaited vacations. Many of these vacationers, possibly including you, will be hitting the roads to go to their favorite spots across the state and country. The problem: more cars on the roads mean more air pollution. Give your car and the environment a break when you return from vacation and try starting a new routine of taking public transportation or carpooling to work. Below are a few facts that might help inspire you:
- Cars emit carbon dioxide (CO2), a heat-trapping gas. In fact, they emit a lot of it: 20 pounds per gallon of gas burned
- Highway exhaust accounts for about 50% of the ozone-forming pollution in the state of North Carolina.
- There are 22 publicly owned urban and small urban transit systems and two regional transit systems operating in North Carolina.
